Halt! Hammerzeit!

"The Slave Market With Disappearing Bust of Voltaire (1940), presents the viewer with an ambiguous image of choir boys in an archway that can also be seen as the face of the famous French Writer-Philosopher."

Simply, a Gestalt can be described as: A collection of physical, biological, psychological or symbolic entities that creates a unified concept, -Wikipedia

Looking at the above picture, Voltaire's face is what strikes me first. It is only after looking closer that I realize it is actually two choir boys. The Gestalts arent images made out of either posetive or negative space, rather the combination of both. Seperate the choir boys would be just that, choir boys, but with the archway they become something left to perception. Something you have to interpret yourself and determine what you want to see.
